Maurice Barksdale with Susan Most

No matter what your circumstances, “you cannot lose your education and knowledge,” declared Maurice Barksdale.  It was this positive outlook and tenacity that helped him work through twelve tough months of living on the streets and various shelters.

Since August, 2011, Maurice has taken a circuitous route to success.

He lost everything he owned and became homeless after Hurricane Ike.  He was giving up his willingness (to try), until he met SEARCH case manager, Susan Most who motivated him when he was down.  “She reminded me that I could make things happen.  When times were toughest, she encouraged me to always strive for the best.”

Susan encouraged Maurice to enroll in the SEARCH Job Club specifically organized for US Veterans.  After having a hot dinner and some casual time to catch up, clients share their experiences, opportunities and frustrations, about their new job.  “It’s so much easier to get back on your feet when you have others to lean on,” said Most.

Maurice would not have been able to be this successful without SEARCH.  Staff helped him get prepared for the job interview process:  he was given an interview suit, Metro passes he used for traveling back and forth to interviews and Wal-Mart cards to help with groceries and sundries.

January marks a new beginning:  Maurice will begin classes at Houston Community College toward his Associate & Applied Science Degree in Financial Planning.  Susan has been by his side, encouraging him to maintain his positive outlook, no matter what challenges arise.
