Starting Over

Angela HarrisAngela Harris, former SEARCH client, celebrated a monumental September.  In addition to starting a Master’s program in Accounting at University of Houston, she joined Pentagroup Financial as a collector and is now working full-time.  She also purchased her first car and her daughter moved back home, after two years of living with relatives.

Life was not always this predictable for Angela.  In 2009, after becoming a victim of domestic violence, she and her daughter fled to a local shelter.  She learned about SEARCH and came to us for help with transportation and meals.  She found a temporary job and an apartment.  Still she struggled and resorted to writing bad checks to pay for her food and other basic necessities.  Bad choices caught up to her and eventually, she was arrested and incarcerated.  By the time she left jail, she lost her job and apartment.  She was alone and on the street.

Finally, she made her way back to SEARCH.  The Employment and Housing teams helped Angela get back on track.  “Everyone at SEARCH treated me so well and were so caring and helpful,” said Angela.  The staff helped Angela get back on her feet.
