Vicki and James

Vicki and JamesVicki and James wanted to give their three kids, James, Jeremaiah, and Jennaveve, a better childhood and more opportunity than they had been given. Both of Polynesian descent, they had worked from an early age to support their parents and siblings. They grew up in poor families, needing food stamps and Medicaid to get along.

But Vicki and James had dreams of their own: college, better jobs, and a home. They packed up their family and moved from Alaska to Houston in September 2013.

Initially homeless, Vicki and James enrolled their two youngest kids in SEARCH’s House of Tiny Treasures while they worked and went to school. Today, James works at Hobby Airport as a line technician, and Vicki is studying nursing at Houston Community College. The family lives in a modest townhome that they furnished with help from SEARCH. They are on their way to living the life that, until now, they could only dream about.

“We want our kids to learn to live on their own, to be independent. We even taught them how to swim. We’re on a tight budget, but we’re not on welfare. Every day is a journey and we’re making it,” Vicki said.

Hope is the one thing people cling to when all else seems lost. At SEARCH, we pursue a mission of providing hope, creating opportunity, and transforming lives for individuals and families experiencing homelessness in our community.
