Deidre Young Success Story

March is National Women’s History Month! Join us as we celebrate the history of American women in our March newsletter and recognize our client Deidre Young!

Deidre was born in Albany, GA in 1973. At age two, she moved to Houston with her mother and sister. Her mother then married a man who, unfortunately, was physically abusive. Eventually, she gave up and quit school in 9th grade.

At only age 5 she was introduced to drugs and her life became unstable. She found herself in rehab at the age of 15 and wound up staying at various halfway houses in the Houston area. In and out of homelessness, finally, Deidre found herself at the Wesley Community Center until she started working with SEARCH in 2000. Today, Deidre is celebrating nine years of sobriety!

With the help of SEARCH’s Don Hall, Britney Lyle and Health Care of the Homeless’ Joseph Benson, Deidre chose to go back to school and obtain her Community Health Worker certificate. After many hours of dedication and study, she achieved her goal in February of 2014. Unfortunately, Deidre’s mother, her rock of support, passed away two days before Deidre successfully completed her program. This was one of the hardest and most emotional events in Deidre’s life, but she knew her mother would be right behind her and would want her to finish and succeed with her CHW certificate.

Deidre credits her mother, sister and SEARCH with her success today!

Congratulations, Deidre!
