SEARCH Employee Story

Russhane HarrisRusshane Harris, Stabilization Services Housing Coordinator, found SEARCH after she was evacuated from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.  Houston offered job security and a safe place to stay for Russhane and her then ten-year-old son.  She found employment at SEARCH through a temporary employment agency and worked for several months as a “temp” before she was hired permanently.  Russhane knows firsthand the obstacles of raising two sons on her own, along with starting over in a new city without friends or family – but after meeting Russhane, you would never think that these obstacles impaired her motivation to provide for her family or affected her contagious, up-beat attitude.

Russhane says it’s no coincidence that she is now employed at SEARCH.  For many years in New Orleans she was always, even if indirectly, working for social service organizations.  At SEARCH, Russhane has worked with several programs: working her way up from receptionist, to tracker, and then into Stabilization Service’s programs – Critical Intervention Rapid Re-housing (CIRR) and Tenant Based Rental Assistance (TBRA).  Fondly called “Rush” by her SEARCH colleagues, she maintains that her positive attitude is actually a “life choice” she incorporates into every aspect of her work.   Russhane always communicates with warmth and sincerity, encouraging clients to stay strong and optimistic. She holds strong to her social services mantra: “have passion for what you do, and compassion for people.”  Russhane truly shows compassion to everyone she interacts with.

“Russhane is very passionate about her job.  She has the proven ability to conquer any challenge that faces her.  Russhane is goal oriented and is always willing to go above and beyond.  She has embraced change throughout her time here and continues to remain positive, committed and willing to learn,” said nominator Shantel Hayward.

Russhane’s youngest son will graduate from high school this May.  She is optimistic about going back to school to finish her degree in, you guessed it, social work.
