On December 12, 2008, SEARCH held its 5th Annual Luncheon at the Westin Galleria. Keynote speaker, Donna Smith who was featured in Michael Moore’s 2007 documentary "SiCKO", told the audience that she never imagined she would be one of millions of Americans facing homelessness until illness struck her and her husband. After all “homelessness doesn’t happen to the middle class”. But after hitting rock bottom financially, she and her husband were forced to move into their daughter’s basement. Smith’s incredible story helped to put a different face on homelessness and helped the audience to see that it can happen to anyone.
During the luncheon, SEARCH also honored Council of Congregations member, Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church for its work with SEARCH and dedication to helping the homeless transform their lives. Pastor Marcus Cosby accepted the Founder’s Award on behalf of Wheeler Avenue Church and encouraged everyone to do their part in the fight against homelessness.
