John Montgomery - Success Story

“Life is a timeline. It’s all about growth.”

We couldn’t agree more and SEARCH client, John Montgomery, is proof of that.

John was born on May 29, 1954 in Chicago, Illinois. Growing up in one of Chicago’s most dangerous neighborhoods, John witnessed more violence than most people can imagine. He had a father who was physically abusive and absent. In 1973, John’s twin brother died. Life would never be the same.

John moved to Houston in 1978 after marrying his wife, who he met at Northeastern University. At first, things seemed to be going well in Houston. He immediately started working for Harvey & Evans Construction and was part of a team that built the Conoco building and Transco Tower located in the Galleria area. In 1981, John was forced to quit his construction career due to a serious shoulder injury.

After months of physical therapy, John decided to attend truck driving school and started driving the big rigs at the end of 1982.

During this time, John and his wife divorced and, as John puts it, he “became caught up in what was going on in the streets.” He was arrested and convicted on drug charges and ended up spending 10 years in prison. During that time, he decided he needed to get his life in order and started attending school; he received an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts and a Bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Science.

After John was released, he needed to get back on track (and needed to take the first steps with a clear mind). Finding SEARCH a few years later, John met Mario Davidson, his case manager.

“Mr. Davidson is very encouraging! He is 100% supportive and told me that I have to believe in myself.”

On July 24, 2014, John will receive his voucher for his new apartment! His new life will begin.
