“SEARCH helped me get my confidence back!”

So often, our loyal veterans come back to the States and have a difficult time readjusting to civilian life. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression and addiction are just a few of the challenges these men and women face. Often, these barriers lead to homelessness. SEARCH is here to help.

Originally from Dallas, James Black is a Vietnam vet who came to Houston in 2012. Life after Vietnam was very difficult for this veteran. After returning from his last tour of duty he fell to the temptation of drugs and alcohol. He knew there was something he was trying to mask with the use of these substances, but didn’t know what it could be. This led him to trouble with the law and eventually spending 6 years in a penitentiary.

After being paroled, James was able to work day labor for a short while. His doctors finally diagnosed him with PTSD. Being homeless only added to the stress of his life. The VA referred him to the Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing program and SEARCH has been able to get Mr. Black housed and on the fast track to becoming the productive member of society.

With the help of SEARCH Case Manager, Susan Most, James is now enrolled in Houston Community College and majoring in Business Technology with a concentration in Microsoft Software Support. He is currently in his 3rd semester and will obtain his Associates and certificate after one more semester.

Congratulations Mr. Black! We at SEARCH have faith in your future!
