Gary Anderson - A SEARCH Success Story

It was the combination of SEARCH’s Disability Specialist Charity Dominguez’s tenaciousness and a little luck from an internet search. After being separated for at least 20 years, and experiencing homelessness for 7 years, Gary Anderson and his sister and brother-in-law from Indiana were reunited in June of 2012.

“I have never been this proud or excited about anything I have done at SEARCH,” said Charity. “This was a genuine and loving reunion. We truly perform miracles here at SEARCH.”

Gary has a familiar story. He, like so many of our clients, joined the Navy during the Vietnam era, then the Merchant Marines after that. He was living in Florida until his career moved him to New Orleans. In November, 2005 Gary found himself a Hurricane Katrina evacuee living on Houston’s streets.

He was experiencing homelessness until earlier this past year. And finally, with Charity’s help, Gary moved into Sparrow Assisted Living. As he began feeling more settled and comfortable, he began to open up and share his story—including the fact that he had family in Indiana. Charity reached out to Gary’s sister and they were able to connect.

“It took 6 years for him to be ready to tell me his full story. We have to be patient,” said Charity. “When our clients are ready and feel more confident, they can take steps to get back on their feet.”
