“SEARCH stood by me. Like a family!”

Anyone can become homeless…even people who have a job.

Franzena came to Houston in 1999 for change and renewal. After arriving, she was immediately employed by the Four Seasons Houston. Living in the city proved to be more exciting and wondrous than she had imagined. She was working in a fabulous hotel in the 4th largest city in the country! What could go wrong?

Unfortunately, while at work, Franzena’s hand became crushed in one of the elevators and caused major damage. The damage was so extensive that she had two major surgeries, followed by physical therapy, to regain partial usage of her hands. This accident was life changing and prevented her from working for three years.

She was able to collect workmen’s compensation at the time, but it was barely enough to get by. “I really wanted to go back to work. I have never been the type to sit and collect assistance.” said Franzena.

She found herself homeless when she exhausted her workman’s compensation benefits. Being homeless had never been something she thought about. She didn’t know what being homeless looked like. This is when she came to SEARCH seeking help.

Eventually her doctor cleared to go back to work, but only part time. SEARCH was able to help Franzena get off the street and assist her with her rent and utilities.

“You guys have really helped me get my life back! You went out of your way to help!”

Franzena now works full time as a Walmart Sales Associate in the Electronics department. She is also in training for a manager’s position. Her brother also moved to Houston and is a great source of emotional support. Life is certainly looking brighter for Franzena.
