Crystal Hailey Success Story

“I had to pull myself out of the darkness for my daughters. It means everything to me now!”

Born in 1979 in the town of Dayton, Texas, Crystal Hailey has had a rough road to travel. When she was 12 years old, her father passed away and she was forced to live with her grandparents. Unfortunately, her grandparents were less than supportive. Her grandfather was emotionally abusive which led to her acting out at an early age.

At the age of 18, Crystal became pregnant with her first daughter, Dezirae. With little in the way of role models, she was forced to head to Houston because there were more resources available to her. “For about a year, I was shuffling around between different family members in Houston,”said Crystal.

After being diagnosed with mental illness, marrying an abusive and drug addicted husband, and having three more children, she felt she had to make some tough choices for the good of her family. Although she had nowhere to go, she knew she had to get her daughters away from her abusive husband.

In 2008, Crystal entered SEARCH’s Housing Plus Program and was able to get her daughters, and herself, away from years of abuse at the hand of her husband.

Since then, she has been accepted into the Capital Idea Program and is working on receiving her degree and becoming a Medical Laboratory Technician.

“I’m a bit nervous about being around other people, but very excited that SEARCH introduced me to the Capital Idea Program. I feel like I’m on my way to being the mom I always knew I could be.”
