Jerry Cohn – SEARCH Volunteer

Jerry Cohn2505 Fannin is more than a building at the corner of McGowen and San Jacinto.  It’s the mailing address for thousands of SEARCH clients past and present.  Each week, SEARCH receives around 3,000 pieces of mail for our clients. Organizing this quantity of mail requires the handiwork of a professional.  Accurately sorting and managing mail, especially documents like Social Security or Disability benefits, a Texas driver’s license or even a holiday letter from a family member is critical to our clients.

Jerry Cohn was just recognized as the United Way/Houston Texans Community Quarterback.  Jerry, a retired Postal Service worker joined the SEARCH volunteer crew three years ago.  He was looking for an opportunity to give back to the Houston community when he came across a listing for SEARCH Homeless Services on the United Way of Houston website.

One of the services SEARCH offers its clients is the use of its address for their personal mail. Staying connected and having a consistent “home” base even when you’re shuffling from place to place are critical to maintaining your identity and productivity.  At the time SEARCH was in need of a mailroom attendant, someone who would maintain proper alphabetical organization of mail, properly file and organize mail, and pass out mail during the appropriate times.

Jerry volunteers at SEARCH two full days a week, arriving as early as 6:00 am so he can be prepared for the 125 clients who come for services at 7:30 am.  His commitment is underscored by the distance he drives to get here from League City.  Now, when he sees someone he recognizes who’s waiting to enter the building he will have their mail sorted and ready for them when they check into the Resource Center.

Jerry is an example of an exceptional individual who uses his very unique skills and interests to benefit the community.  For Jerry, volunteering significantly impacts his life and makes him more appreciative of his family and many blessings.
