Second Generation Supports SEARCH’s Efforts

Photo of Deborah BrownDeborah Brown is not the typical SEARCH donor—not because she’s a teen, because the number of teen volunteers and in-kind donors is on the rise at SEARCH.  She’s a second generation SEARCH volunteer.  Deborah’s parents, Marisa and Harry Brown met at SEARCH (Click here to read their story) and are actively teaching their children to give back.

“My parents are good role models.  They talk with us about helping others and they volunteer themselves.  I want to follow their example,” said Deborah.

For her recent Bat Mitzvah luncheon, Deborah created 20 centerpieces that are directly impacting SEARCH clients.  Rather than adorn her tables with flowers, she collected food for our food pantry, then wrapped them in decorative, translucent purple bags. Her table tent cards explained how her creative contribution will help people in need.

Deborah’s inspiration from others is significant.  In 2001, her family’s apartment was completely flooded in Tropical Storm Allison.  “So many people helped us.  Now, it’s my turn to pay it forward,” she explained.

Deborah lives by an Anne Frank quote, “How wonderful is it, that no one need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.”
